Opposition Leaders Denounce Amended Electoral Act 2026

Opposition leaders, led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have publicly rejected the amended Electoral Act 2026, claiming that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has manipulated the legislative process to benefit itself ahead of the 2027 general elections. During a press conference in Abuja, Ajuri Ahm of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) criticized the manner in which the National Assembly passed the amendments, questioning the transparency of the electoral process.

The opposition highlighted concerns regarding the electronic transmission of election results, emphasizing that the amendments undermine transparency. They expressed surprise at the speed with which President Bola Tinubu assented to the bill, particularly following the recent conclusion of the Federal Capital Territory area council elections, which they described as a litmus test for the new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The opposition leaders further rejected the outcomes of these elections, indicating a lack of confidence in the electoral reforms.
