The African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has vowed to channel local government funds directly to councils throughout Nigeria should he prevail in the 2027 election. Through Kenneth Okonkwo, his official spokesperson, the former Vice President released a Tuesday statement framing this commitment as a constitutional duty rather than mere policy preference.

Central to this pledge is a July 2024 Supreme Court ruling requiring that allocations meant for the third tier be remitted directly to local governments. Atiku's team maintains that President Bola Tinubu's current regime has neglected to give effect to this judgment.

Per Okonkwo's remarks, Atiku would emphasize adherence to constitutional law and secure autonomous governance standing for every level of the federation. Nigeria's federal system has long grappled with how local government resources are managed.

Traditionally, state administrations have functioned as intermediaries for these transfers. By channeling funds directly to councils, Atiku's proposal would alter this arrangement.

He signaled his intention to treat the Supreme Court order as binding from his inaugural day. The spokesperson's statement omitted specifics regarding when implementation would occur following Atiku's assumption of office, or how the mechanism for executing payments would actually function.
