Atiku Criticizes Tinubu Over Rising Petrol Prices Impact

Atiku Abubakar, through his media aide Phrank Shaibu, responded to Bola Tinubu's criticism regarding proposals to reduce energy costs. Shaibu stated that with petrol prices at approximately ₦1,400 per litre, buying 40 litres costs around ₦56,000, which is 80% of the ₦70,000 statutory minimum wage.

This leaves low-income workers with only ₦14,000 for essential expenses. The statement emphasized the broader economic impact of high energy costs, affecting transportation, food prices, and agriculture.

It compared Nigeria's petrol prices unfavorably with those of other oil-producing nations, such as Libya, where petrol is significantly cheaper. Shaibu accused the Tinubu administration of inconsistency in its economic policies and called for transparency regarding the ₦15.8 trillion claimed to have been mobilized from petrol subsidy removal.

He also demanded clarity on discrepancies involving ₦30 trillion in Federation Account revenues and the beneficiaries of Import Duty Exemption Certificate approvals.
