Atiku Abubakar Calls for Emergency Action on School Attacks

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, has urged the federal government to take immediate action to address the rising bandit attacks on schools in Nigeria. His call comes after a recent attack at a secondary school in Iluk Bunu, Kogi State, where gunmen killed three individuals, including the school's vice principal, and abducted several students.

Abubakar described the attacks as a deliberate attempt to disrupt education and create fear among students, teachers, and parents. He emphasized that the worsening security situation in Nigeria necessitates extraordinary measures, including the declaration of a state of emergency to empower security forces to act decisively.

He clarified that his proposal does not involve suspending elected officials but aims to strengthen security responses. Abubakar also noted the increasing frequency of attacks on educational institutions, which threaten the country's long-term human capital development.
