Atiku Calls for Security Emergency Amid Rising Violence

Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice President and member of the African Democratic Congress, has urged the Nigerian government to declare a security emergency to empower military commanders in combating terrorism and criminal activities. This call follows a recent attack in Kogi State where three individuals, including a vice principal, were killed, and 90 schoolchildren were abducted.

The Northern Elder Forum (NEF) echoed this sentiment, warning that the increasing violence from kidnappings and banditry poses a serious threat to Nigeria's stability and economy. NEF spokesperson Abubakar Jidder described the current security situation as unprecedented, leaving millions vulnerable.

The forum and Abubakar emphasized the need for extraordinary measures, including the establishment of a national guard and improved intelligence to counteract terrorist movements. They advocate for a proactive approach to ensure the safety of educational environments, as attacks on schools have become increasingly common, creating anxiety and trauma among students and teachers.
