Atiku Vows to Cut Living Costs, Blasts Tinubu's Fuel Subsidy Removal

ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar promised to restore targeted fuel support and ease economic hardship, citing Germany's tax cuts as a model.

Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress's presidential hopeful and former Vice President, has vowed to ease the economic hardship created by subsidy elimination on petrol should voters elect him in 2027. Through a statement distributed Friday by his campaign communications director, he signaled plans to restore affordability of basic services and goods for everyday Nigerians who face mounting burdens from transport, food, and energy outlays.

Atiku's pledge stands in direct opposition to how President Bola Tinubu has managed fuel policy decisions. He contended that during his recent Independence Day remarks, Tinubu glossed over the financial pressures weighing on Nigerian households daily, where fuel and transport outlays have grown prohibitively expensive.

The ADC standard-bearer cast himself as responsive to popular grievances where national leadership has shown itself out of touch. Atiku's core remedy involves reinstating selective state assistance directed at petroleum products refined domestically within Nigeria's borders.

This diverges fundamentally from the current subsidy withdrawal approach. He also drew attention to Germany's choice to slash fuel levies as proof that governments responsive to citizen hardship can implement targeted relief—an unmistakable rebuke of how Tinubu's team has proceeded.

Atiku's pronouncement underscores his bid to capitalize on resistance to current fuel-related economic measures before the 2027 election cycle. Through strategist Phrank Shaibu overseeing his campaign's public messaging, the commitment has been framed as part of wider endeavors aimed at alleviating financial strain tied to commodities—from fuel to food to transportation—whose prices have surged markedly following subsidy termination.
