Atiku Abubakar's US lobbyist, Von Batten Montagu York L.C., has alleged that the administration of President Bola Tinubu is engaging in political intimidation against critics, which threatens democratic freedoms in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections. The firm claims that the government is increasingly exhibiting behaviors characteristic of a single-party dictatorship, consolidating power through fear tactics.

Specific allegations include the sudden arrests and detentions of public figures and ordinary citizens who criticize the current government. The firm referenced ongoing legal challenges involving former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who has faced significant detention despite a federal high court granting him bail.

The lobbyist firm indicated that they may brief former U.S. President Donald Trump and Congress about these developments, describing the situation as a growing weaponization of state institutions to silence dissent.

The statement also highlighted the case of businessman John Olatund Ayeni, who reportedly faces legal pressure for criticizing the government.
