Atiku Accuses Tinubu of Undermining Democracy Ahead of 2027

Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, has publicly accused President Bola Tinubu of attempting to undermine democratic principles by silencing opposition voices as the country approaches the 2027 general elections. This statement was issued on Thursday, October 19, 2023, through his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu.

The accusation comes in response to comments made by Tinubu's presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, who argued that Tinubu should complete an eight-year term based on a power rotation arrangement between the northern and southern regions of Nigeria. Onanuga's assertion that Tinubu's presidency should last until 2031 has drawn criticism from opposition figures, who describe it as unconstitutional.

Shaibu rejected Onanuga's argument, emphasizing that political arrangements regarding power rotation are not legally binding. Furthermore, Shaibu accused the Tinubu administration of attempting to intimidate Atiku in the lead-up to the 2027 elections, citing inconsistencies in the ruling party's adherence to zoning principles.
