Man Charged with Attempted Assassination of Trump

Cole Toma Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California, has been charged with attempted assassination following an incident at a Washington event where President Donald Trump was present. The event, a White House Correspondents' Association dinner, took place on April 6, 2023.

Allen attempted to breach security with a shotgun and pistol, leading to an exchange of gunfire with Secret Service agents. He was arrested and faces federal charges, including attempted assassination, which could result in life imprisonment.

The FBI affidavit indicates that Allen had planned the attack, referencing grievances against the Trump administration in emails sent to family members. He was described as a good student and a part-time tutor, with no prior criminal record.

A detention hearing is scheduled for Thursday, where prosecutors requested that he remain in custody pending further proceedings.
