FG Resists Boko Haram Reintegration into Nigerian Military

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Georg Akum, addressed participants at the first plenary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria held at St. Gabriel's Chaplaincy in Abuja.

He discussed the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, particularly under the administration of President Bola Tinubu. Akum clarified that attempts to reintegrate former Boko Haram members into the military were made during previous administrations but did not progress significantly and were ultimately halted.

He expressed hope that any future measures would not be reintroduced without thorough consideration, urging stakeholders, including religious leaders, to approach the issue holistically. Akum also referenced recent security reports, indicating that some arrests connected to recent attacks were not linked to Nigerian nationals.

He noted that Boko Haram originated within Nigeria and highlighted the impact of ongoing attacks in rural communities, particularly in Niger State. Additionally, he mentioned President Tinubu's recent visit to Turkey, which was partly aimed at procuring advanced military hardware, including drones, to strengthen Nigeria's security architecture.
