AU Condemns Zamfara Attack, Calls for Release of Abductees

The African Union (AU) condemned a coordinated terrorist attack that occurred on February 21, 2026, in Zamfara State, Nigeria, which led to the deaths of 50 civilians and the abduction of women and children. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, issued a statement on the AU's official website, describing the attack as a grave violation of human rights and a serious threat to peace and security.

The AU unequivocally rejected the act of terror and expressed full solidarity with the government and people of Nigeria, conveying heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishing a swift recovery to the injured. Youssouf reaffirmed the AU's unwavering support for Nigeria's efforts to address insecurity and restore peace.

He also called for the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted individuals and urged for strengthened coordinated actions to protect civilian populations and prevent future atrocities. The attack reportedly took place in Dutsin Dan Ajiya village, Anka Local Government Area, where bandits used sophisticated weapons to block access roads and carried out the assault.
