Australia Exempts Certain Foreigners from English Proof for Visa

Australia's Department of Home Affairs has published a breakdown of categories exempting certain foreign nationals from submitting proof of English language proficiency when applying for a Student visa (subclass 500). Generally, applicants must demonstrate English ability through approved language tests.

However, exemptions apply to passport holders from five English-speaking countries: the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand, and the Republic of Ireland. Additional exemptions include applicants sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or the Department of Defence, Secondary Exchange students under the AASES programme, students enrolling in registered school courses, standalone English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS), or courses taught in a language other than English.

Those pursuing registered postgraduate research programmes or who have completed five years of study in English in specified countries are also exempt. Notably, holders of British National Overseas (BNO) passports may still be required to provide English test results.
