Kogi Journalists Demand Insurance Coverage from Government

The Kogi State Council Nigeria Union of Journalists has called on the Kogi State government to establish a comprehensive insurance scheme for journalists following an accident on Obajana Road that involved members of the Correspondents' Chapel. The appeal was made in a statement signed jointly by the council's chairman, Ademu Haruna, and secretary, Atuluku Samuel, and was made available to journalists in Lokoja on Monday.

The union described the insurance cover as necessary due to the occupational hazards associated with journalism, noting that journalists play a critical role in promoting democracy and national development and therefore deserve adequate welfare protection. The statement urged the state government to take the issue seriously, highlighting that journalists often work under hazardous conditions to keep society informed.

Additionally, the council expressed gratitude that members of the Correspondents' Chapel survived the accident and called for intensified efforts to curb reckless driving by heavy-duty truck drivers on Obajana Road.
