Major Surprises in 2026 Ballon d'Or Nominations

The 2026 Ballon d’Or nominations, announced by France Football and UEFA on Tuesday, featured notable omissions, including five-time winner Cristiano Ronaldo and Barcelona star Raphinha. Ronaldo has been left out for the fourth consecutive year, last appearing in 2022, despite his contributions to Al-Nassr's Saudi Pro League title.

Raphinha, who finished fifth in last year's voting, also failed to make the 30-man shortlist, surprising many given his influence at Barcelona. Additionally, Nigerian players Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman did not secure nominations.

This year's ceremony marks the 70th anniversary of the Ballon d’Or and will take place on October 26 at the London Palladium Theatre, the first time the event is held in London since its inception in 1956. The choice of London honors Stanley Matthews, the award's first winner.

While Ronaldo's absence is notable, Messi's return to the nominees after missing the last two editions is a significant highlight.
