Bandit Attacks Threaten Education in Northern Nigeria

The Northern Youth Frontier's student wing has raised alarms over the increasing threat of bandit attacks on campuses in northern Nigeria, warning that these incidents undermine educational access for thousands of students. In a communiqué issued after a congress involving student leaders from 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory held in Abuja, they called for urgent action from President Bola Tinubu to intensify security measures across vulnerable campuses.

The communiqué highlighted the need for increased investment in safe school initiatives and a stronger security presence around universities and polytechnic colleges. Despite the establishment of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which has disbursed N72.03 billion to support students, insecurity continues to disrupt academic activities and heighten anxiety among parents.

The group noted that 1.3 million Nigerian students have registered on the NELFUND portal, with monthly disbursements aimed at alleviating financial burdens. They emphasized that the ongoing insecurity is contributing to declining school enrollment and urged the government to ensure that educational benefits are not eroded by violence.
