Barau Advocates for Accountability in State Police Framework

On Wednesday, Jibrin Barau, the Deputy President of the Senate, urged for accountability and public trust in the proposed state police framework during a meeting in Abuja. He addressed a high-level committee from the Nigeria Police Force tasked with developing this framework, which was inaugurated on March 4, 2026, under the leadership of Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu.

Barau stressed that the success of the state police system depends on a framework that responds to citizens' fears and expectations. He called for measures to prevent political misuse and emphasized the need for a robust public safety mechanism.

Barau also highlighted the importance of public enlightenment campaigns to educate citizens about the benefits of the state police. He commended the Inspector General for aligning security initiatives with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, describing the move as a step toward strengthening Nigeria's internal security architecture.

The committee aims to produce a comprehensive framework consistent with constitutional provisions and democratic principles.
