Barau Jibrin Discusses State Police Framework in Abuja

On Tuesday, Barau Jibrin, the Deputy President of the Senate, met with members of the Nigeria Police Force Steering Committee in Abuja to discuss the proposed establishment of state police. He assured that the concerns of Nigerians regarding this initiative would be adequately addressed.

The committee, which was inaugurated on March 4, 2026, is led by Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu and tasked with developing a framework for the creation of state police. Jibrin emphasized the importance of legislative input to strengthen the committee's final report.

He commended the police leadership for aligning security objectives with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The Senate Committee is currently reviewing the 1999 Constitution and has conducted zonal public hearings across six geopolitical zones to gather stakeholder contributions for the amendment process, which aims to enhance local law enforcement and community engagement.
