Bashir Ahmad Calls for INEC to Adjust 2027 Election Schedule

Bashir Ahmad, a former media aide to the president, expressed alarm regarding the low voter turnout observed in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kano, and Rivers during the council elections held on February 21, 2026. He attributed this low participation to the ongoing Ramadan fast, which he noted reduced physical movement and increased spiritual focus among Muslims.

Ahmad emphasized the need for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to consider these factors when scheduling the 2027 general elections. He called for adjustments to the election timetable, highlighting that the presidential and national assembly elections are set for February 20, 2027, followed by the governorship and state assembly elections on March 6, 2027.

Ahmad's comments were made during a conference in Abuja, where he stressed the importance of ensuring inclusive citizen participation in the electoral process.
