Bauchi State High Court Launches Family Courts for Children

The Bauchi State High Court has introduced family courts to safeguard children's rights in accordance with the Bauchi State Child Protection Law, 2023. Mrs Amina Garuba, the Chief Magistrate and judge of Family Court 1 at the Magistrates’ Court level, announced this development during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
The family courts are tasked with adjudicating issues such as adoption, fostering, custody, and emergency cases. Garuba indicated that certain cases might be referred to Sharia Courts for further hearing when necessary.
One High Court and one Magistrates’ Court have been designated to address all matters concerning children, whether they are in conflict with the law or not. The judges will receive training in behavioral sciences to enhance their understanding of children's attitudes and behaviors.
Additionally, the family courts are mandated to protect children and clients from public exposure to prevent discrimination and ensure their future development, including handling criminal cases involving children.
