Bauchi Assembly Advances Maternal Healthcare Bill

The Bauchi State House of Assembly's Committee on Health and Human Services organized a public hearing on a bill aimed at prohibiting unsafe childbirth practices, improving pregnancy emergency management, and regulating blood transfusion services. Sponsored by Speaker Rt.

Hon. Abubakar Y Suleiman, the hearing took place at the Sir Ahmadu Bello International Conference Centre under the theme “Safe Motherhood and Quality Healthcare for All in Bauchi State.” The Speaker emphasized that the bill focuses on prevention and protection, clarifying that it is not an attack on Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) but aims to define responsibilities and eliminate harmful practices. The bill's effective implementation requires adequate funding and qualified personnel.

Health Committee Chairman Hon. Dauda Lawal noted the bill addresses gaps in emergency pregnancy management. The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sani Muhammad Dambam, called for stronger mechanisms for law implementation.

The Emir of Darazo, Alhaji Ibrahim Babayo Mohammed, and representatives from the Police and Judiciary supported the initiative. Health experts raised concerns about unsafe practices, urging the Assembly to prioritize licensing healthcare facilities and improving blood bank availability.
