Bauchi Stakeholders Commit to Ending Polio on World Polio Day

On World Polio Day, stakeholders in Bauchi State reaffirmed their commitment to achieving a polio-free society. The event featured a road walk from the Bauchi Emir’s Palace to Government House to raise awareness about polio eradication.
Dr Patrick Akor, health officer at the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), described polio as a highly infectious viral disease that can cause paralysis or death in children under five. He emphasized that safe and effective vaccines are crucial for prevention.
Akor noted that despite significant progress, challenges such as outbreaks and misinformation persist. Comfort Attah, President of the Rotary Club of Bauchi Central, reported a 99.9 percent decline in polio cases since the global eradication initiative began but warned that the fight is not over.
She called for active participation from the Bauchi State Government, parents, and community leaders to ensure eligible children receive vaccinations.
