Dr. Peter Akp Sworn In as Bayelsa's New Deputy Governor

On December 11, 2025, Justice Matilda Ayemiey, the Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, administered the oath of office to Dr. Peter Akp, who has been appointed as the new Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State.

This ceremony took place in the Executive Council Chamber of the Government House in Yenagoa. Dr.

Akp's nomination by Governor Douye Diri was confirmed by the State House of Assembly, making him the sixth Deputy Governor since the return to democracy in 1999. His predecessor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, resigned from the position.

During the swearing-in, Justice Ayemiey urged Dr. Akp to ensure that his actions reflect the trust and confidence placed in him by the governor and the people of Bayelsa State.

Governor Diri emphasized the importance of integrity and commitment in Akp's new role, which includes overseeing various state responsibilities. Additionally, Madam Joanna Gigi was sworn in as the new Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, along with 18 permanent secretaries.
