Dr. Peter Akp Sworn in as Bayelsa's New Deputy Governor

On December 11, 2025, Justice Matilda Ayemiey, the Chief Judge of Bayelsa State, administered the oath of office to Dr. Peter Akp, who has been appointed as the new Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State.

This ceremony took place inside the Executive Council Chamber at the Government House in Yenagoa. Dr.

Akp's nomination was made by Governor Douye Diri and subsequently cleared by the State House of Assembly. He becomes the sixth Deputy Governor of Bayelsa since the return to democracy in 1999, following the sudden resignation of his predecessor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

During the ceremony, Justice Ayemiey urged Dr. Akp to ensure that his words and actions reflect the trust and confidence placed in him by the Governor.

Additionally, Madam Joanna Gigi was sworn in as the Permanent Secretary for Women and Children Affairs, filling the vacancy left by the resignation of Mr. Elizabeth Bidei on December 30, 2024.
