The UK government, through Lisa Nandi, assured that the matter was being taken seriously, emphasizing BBC's independence. Trump's legal team sent a letter rejecting the edit as defamatory.

The controversy arose from a segment in a 2022 Newsnight broadcast that merged distant parts of Trump's speech.
