Beatrice Ekweremadu Returns to Nigeria After UK Prison Release in Organ Harvesting Case

Beatrice Ekweremadu, the wife of former Nigerian Deputy Senate President Ik Ekweremadu, has returned to Nigeria after being released from a UK prison. She was involved in an organ harvesting conspiracy and was convicted in May 2023 for her role in facilitating the travel of a 21-year-old Lagos street trader to the UK for the purpose of harvesting kidneys.

Her daughter, Sonia Ekweremadu, who suffers from a chronic kidney condition, was at the center of the conspiracy. Despite her release, Ik Ekweremadu remains in prison serving a longer sentence.

Efforts to secure his transfer to a Nigerian facility have been unsuccessful. Another individual, Dr.

Obinna Obeta, described as a prosecutor and medic middleman in the UK, is serving a 10-year prison term in connection with the case. The UK Home Office rejected a proposal in November 2025 to transfer Ik Ekweremadu to a Nigerian facility, citing concerns about ensuring the enforcement of his sentence in Nigerian jurisdiction.
