Benfica Suspends Five Fans for Racist Abuse in Match

Benfica has taken disciplinary action against five of its fans who were involved in racist abuse during the Champions League knockout match against Real Madrid on February 17. The incident occurred when Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr. complained to the referee about racial abuse directed at him, which involved gestures towards Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni during a heated exchange.

Benfica confirmed the suspension of the fans in a statement, highlighting that during the match, Vinicius celebrated a goal in front of the home supporters, which was met with racist gestures from the stands. Following the incident, Vinicius approached the referee to report the abuse, leading to several Real Madrid players walking off the pitch in protest.

Benfica's manager, José Mourinho, criticized Vinicius for allegedly inciting the crowd with his celebration. The match concluded with Real Madrid winning 2-1, securing a 3-1 aggregate victory.

Benfica has rejected claims that Prestianni admitted to hearing direct racist insults towards Vinicius.
