Benue LG Workers Launch Warning Strike Over Salaries

Local government workers in Benue State commenced a warning strike on May 14, 2026, following a 14-day ultimatum issued by the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE). The strike was announced by NULGE state president Joshua Adah Adiniya and state secretary Aseneshi Musa Yusuf, who accused the Benue State Government, led by Governor Hyacinth Alia, of failing to address ongoing welfare issues affecting local government employees.

The union stated that it had exhausted all avenues for dialogue before resorting to industrial action. Workers are demanding immediate payment of outstanding salaries for March and April 2026, implementation of pending promotions, resolution of issues surrounding BEPCON remittances, and reinstatement of disengaged local government workers from 2011 and 2012.

The union expressed frustration over the lack of meaningful responses from the state government and instructed members across 23 local government areas to comply with the strike directive, resulting in a total lockdown of the third tier of government in Benue State until further notice.
