Benue Panel Reveals N139.8bn Missing Public Funds

The Benue State Income Expenditure Commission of Inquiry, chaired by Justice Jubril Idrisu, reported on Friday the discovery of approximately N139.8 billion in unaccounted public funds during the period from May 29, 2015, to May 28, 2023. The commission's findings indicated that the state generated N826.5 billion in revenue while expenditures stood at N683.4 billion, leaving an unaccounted balance of N139.8 billion.

The commission, inaugurated in June 2025, was tasked with examining the income and expenditure of the immediate past administration across 23 local government councils. The report highlighted questionable loan transactions involving financial institutions and recommended the recovery of funds from those found responsible.

Governor Hyacinth Alia reaffirmed his administration's commitment to transparency and accountability, while Dr. Sam Od Alia commended the commission for its diligent work despite challenges in obtaining information.
