Benue State Reports New Lassa Fever Deaths and Cases

Benue State has recorded new deaths from Lassa fever, confirming 11 fatalities among 46 confirmed cases as of March 4, 2026. Paul Ogwuch, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, provided updates during a workshop for the 2026 Annual Operational Plan of the Benue State Action Committee.

The state is currently monitoring 251 suspected cases, with 45 testing positive and 250 suspected infections reported. Among the infected are 13 healthcare workers, including five doctors, four nurses, and two community health extension workers.

Currently, 29 patients are receiving treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital and the Federal Medical Centre in Makurdi. Ogwuch emphasized the importance of strengthening surveillance and infection control measures, urging residents to avoid storing food that attracts rodents and to seek medical attention for persistent symptoms.

He commended Governor Hyacinth Alia for supporting emergency response measures aimed at improving case management and public awareness to prevent further spread of the outbreak.
