Benue Confirms Chickenpox, Rules Out Mpox Outbreak

Benue State has confirmed cases of Chickenpox while ruling out an Mpox outbreak. Dr Paul Ogwuche, the State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, announced this conclusion following an investigation by the ministry’s Public Health Emergency Operations Centre (PHEOC), the State Epidemiology Unit, and the Disease Surveillance and Notification System.

The ministry received reports on July 25 regarding residents of Tyokula Achihi Residence experiencing fever and blister-like skin rashes. The investigation revealed two adult residents had developed fever and skin rashes but were recovering after seeking treatment at a private health facility.

Clinical assessments indicated the illness followed the typical course of Chickenpox, with no lesions on the palms, soles, or mouth, which are key features of Mpox. Surveillance has been intensified in Korinya and neighboring communities, with Disease Surveillance and Notification Officers conducting active case searches.

Ogwuche urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information, emphasizing the importance of scientific investigation in suspected disease outbreaks.
