Armed Herdsmen Kill Two Police Officers in Benue Attack

On September 16, 2026, suspected armed herdsmen attacked the convoy of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ayilamo in the Logo local government area of Benue State, leading to the deaths of two police officers. A local resident reported that the DPO had traveled to Makurdi for official duties and was returning to Ayilamo when the attack occurred around 18:00 hours on Monday.

The officers, newly deployed mobile police assigned to the Ayilamo community, were escorting the DPO back from Makurdi when they encountered the attackers. DSP Peter Orchia Aondongu, spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, confirmed the incident, stating that the DPO lost two of his men during the attack.

This incident follows a previous attack on the community where seven residents and four police officers were killed.
