Nigeria Launches Initiative for Cancer Patient Support

On June 17, 2026, the National Cancer Control Plan (NCCP) Technical Working Group launched Nigeria’s Social Determinants of Health Initiative in Abuja, aimed at addressing the barriers cancer patients face beyond clinical treatment. The Honourable Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr.

Iziaq Adekunle Salako, flagged off the initiative with a N50 million donation to support its implementation. The initiative provides practical support to cancer patients, with 228 selected patients and survivors receiving N100,000 each, totaling N22.8 million in direct assistance.

The selection process emphasized transparency and accountability, ensuring aid reached deserving beneficiaries across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory. Following the national launch, the South-East geopolitical zone began regional implementation, engaging stakeholders from Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States to address local challenges faced by cancer patients.

Similar initiatives are planned for other geopolitical zones, reflecting a commitment to equitable and patient-centered cancer care.
