Kainji-Birnin Kebbi Power Line Tower Collapse Disrupts Service

On September 8, 2026, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed that electricity transmission along the Kainji-Birnin Kebbi corridor was disrupted due to the collapse of Tower T367, caused by heavy winds and rainstorms. The incident occurred at approximately 10:44 p.m. on September 7, 2026, leading TCN to declare force majeure on the 330kV Kainji-Birnin Kebbi transmission line.

An attempt to restore the line at 11:07 p.m. was unsuccessful as it tripped again. TCN dispatched linesmen from the Birnin Kebbi Sub-Region to inspect the corridor, where they discovered the collapsed tower.

Despite the disruption, TCN maintained power transmission to Sokoto through an alternative route from the Kaduna-Mando axis via the 132kV Zaria-Funtua-Gusau transmission line. TCN is arranging to move personnel and equipment to rebuild the tower and restore normal electricity transmission, while apologizing to consumers for the inconvenience caused.
