Nigeria Sees 792 Deaths from Insecurity in June 2026

In June 2026, Nigeria experienced 792 deaths due to insecurity, with 882 security incidents reported across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Borno State recorded the highest number of incidents at 109, resulting in 172 fatalities, primarily around the Lake Chad Basin and Sambisa Forest.

Zamfara followed with 63 incidents linked to entrenched banditry. Other states with significant incidents included Plateau (51), Katsina (44), and Lagos (40).

The report from SARI Global indicates that the majority of incidents were categorized as armed conflict (297) and civil unrest (110). Notably, ISWAP conducted a raid on a secondary school in Lassa, abducting students and teachers.

The report also highlighted the humanitarian crisis, with ISWAP's actions restricting access to aid for internally displaced persons. The month saw a peak in violent incidents during the second week, coinciding with intensified military operations against insurgents and bandits.
