Benue Seminarian Kelvin Ochai Escapes from Kidnappers

Kelvin Ochai, a seminarian of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo in Benue State, escaped from his abductors on the evening of Friday, July 31, 2026. The Diocese confirmed his safe return in a statement issued by its Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Joseph Itodo, attributing it to divine intervention and the prayers of Christians and supporters.

After escaping, Ochai made his way to Aliade in Gwer East Local Government Area and was reunited with his family unharmed. Most Rev. Michael Ekwoyi Apochi, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo, expressed gratitude to the community for their prayers and support during Ochai's captivity.

The incident has drawn attention to the increasing insecurity in Benue State, where kidnapping and violent attacks are prevalent. While the Diocese did not provide further details about the abduction or escape, the safe return of Ochai has been met with relief by the Catholic community and local residents.
