Appeal Court Upholds Senator Natasha Akpoti's Suspension in Abuja Ruling

The Appeal Court in Abuja upheld the six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti by the Senate for misconduct during a plenary session. The court found that the Senate acted within its powers in suspending her but vacated a contempt proceeding and a fine of 5 million against her.

Senator Akpoti had confronted Senator Godswil Akpabio over a seat reassignment issue, leading to her suspension. The court clarified that while the Senate had the right to sanction its members, it should not exceed its powers or deny constitutional rights.

The case stemmed from a previous lawsuit filed by Senator Bola Tinubu against Akpoti in the Federal Capital Territory High Court. Akpoti's suspension was deemed excessive by the court, leading to its affirmation but with modifications.
