BREAKING: ASUU Threatens ‘Mother of All Strikes’ Over 2009 Agreement with FG

ASUU has issued a strong warning of a potential nationwide strike, dubbed the 'mother of all strikes,' if the Federal Government fails to honor the 2009 agreement reached with the union. The Chairman of the University of Calabar chapter, Peter Ubi, stated that the industrial action would begin on August 28 if the government does not meet their demands for sustainable funding and revitalization of Nigerian universities.

The issues include outstanding wage awards, salary arrears, promotion arrears, and remittance of withheld deductions. ASUU emphasized that they have exhausted dialogue options and accused the government of not keeping its promises.

Additionally, the union raised concerns about the proliferation of private universities in Nigeria, which they believe undermines the quality of education due to resource constraints and underutilized facilities. The Federal Executive Council recently approved a moratorium on establishing new federal tertiary institutions, but nine new universities have still been approved despite the freeze.
