ASUU Threatens Fresh Strike Over Failed 2009 Agreement, Others

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened a nationwide strike over the Federal Government's failure to honor a 2009 agreement and other issues. ASUU President Christopher Piwuna highlighted unresolved issues such as the renegotiation of the agreement, outstanding salary arrears, withheld promotions, and the welfare of retired lecturers.

Despite numerous letters to the government, ASUU claims their pleas have fallen on deaf ears, leading to a potential strike action. Piwuna criticized the government's proposed tertiary institution staff support loan scheme as a trap, emphasizing the need for the implementation of agreements to improve purchasing power.

ASUU also expressed concerns about the proliferation of universities without sustainable funding, warning of a potential decline in academic standards and global rankings. The union plans to await the outcome of a government meeting on August 28 before deciding on their next steps, but has announced member rallies to demonstrate frustration.

ASUU emphasized the urgency of the situation, warning that the future of Nigerian universities is at risk.
