Kano Governor Abba Yusuf Nominates New Deputy Governor

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has officially nominated Alhaji Murtala Garo as the new deputy governor of Kano State. This decision comes after the voluntary resignation of the former deputy governor, Abdussalam Gwarzo, on March 27, 2026.

The nomination was announced in a statement issued by the governor's chief press secretary, Mustapha Muhammad. It is made in line with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution, which allows the governor to appoint a deputy governor in the event of a vacancy.

The statement noted that the decision followed consultations with key stakeholders across the state. Alhaji Murtala Garo is described as a seasoned politician with 20 years of experience in governance and party administration, having served in various roles, including as local government chairman and secretary of the local government chieftaincy affairs commission.

He previously contested for the deputy governorship candidacy under the Progressive Congress during the 2023 general elections. The nomination is now subject to confirmation by the Kano State House of Assembly.
