Kano Governor Abba Yusuf Nominates Murtala Garo as Deputy

On March 27, 2026, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf nominated Alhaji Murtala Garo as the new deputy governor after the position became vacant due to the voluntary resignation of former deputy governor Abdussalam Gwarzo. The nomination was transmitted to the Kano State House of Assembly for screening and confirmation, as stated by the governor's chief press secretary, Mustapha Muhammad.

The nomination was made in accordance with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the governor to nominate a deputy governor in the event of a vacancy. Governor Yusuf's decision followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders across the state.

Mustapha Muhammad described Garo as a seasoned politician with two decades of experience in various elected and appointed positions. Garo, 48, has served as the state organizing secretary of the Progress Congress and as the chairman of the Kabo Local Government Area, among other roles.
