Bayelsa State Appoints Peter Akp as New Deputy Governor

The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has approved the appointment of Peter Akp as the new deputy governor of Bayelsa State. This decision was made during a plenary session on Tuesday, bringing an end to a week of consultations following the vacancy created by the death of former deputy governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

Ewhrudjakpo reportedly collapsed on December 11, 2025, and was pronounced dead at the Federal Medical Centre in Yenagoa. His funeral took place on January 30, 2026, in his hometown of Ofoni, located in the Sagbama Local Government Area of the state.

Peter Akp, who previously served as the chief of staff to Governor Douye Diri, was nominated for the deputy governorship position, and the lawmakers expressed confidence in his ability to support ongoing developmental efforts in Bayelsa State.
