Peter Akpe Confirmed as Bayelsa's New Deputy Governor

On Tuesday, the Bayelsa State House of Assembly confirmed Peter Akpe as the new Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State. This appointment follows the death of the former Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away on January 30, 2026, after collapsing in his office on December 11, 2025, and subsequently being flown abroad for advanced medical treatment.

Peter Akpe, who holds a PhD in Administration from the University of Port Harcourt, has an extensive public service record, including roles as Chief of Staff to Governor Douye Diri and as a part-time lecturer at the Redeemed Christian Bible College. His predecessor, Ewhrudjakpo, was buried in his hometown of Ofoni, Sagbama Local Government Area, following a four-day funeral program approved by the Bayelsa State government.
