Nigeria Plunges into Darkness Again as National Grid Collapses

Nigeria faces another national blackout as the national grid collapses for the second time within a week, causing power allocation to drop to zero megawatts for 11 distribution companies (DISCOs) on Tuesday. The blackout affected major cities including Benin, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Abuja, and Yola.

This incident follows a similar collapse that occurred on Friday, January 23, 2026, marking the first grid failure of the year. Despite government assurances and investments aimed at stabilizing the electricity transmission system, the grid continues to suffer repeated collapses.

The recent blackout highlights concerns about the reliability of the nation's power infrastructure, especially as the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) recently announced the restoration of an additional 450MW to the grid following maintenance work on the Geregu and National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) plants. However, the latest collapse indicates that the impact of these interventions may be short-lived.
