Tinubu Meets NLC Leaders to Discuss Labor Issues Ahead of 2027

On Tuesday, Bola Tinubu, the President of Nigeria, hosted a summit at the State House in Abuja with the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and members of the Progressive Governors Forum. The meeting, which commenced at 11:00 AM in the banquet hall, aimed to foster dialogue between the federal government and state governors regarding labor issues amid Nigeria's economic challenges.

Sources familiar with the meeting disclosed that the NLC leadership presented a charter of demands, which reportedly included calls for wage increases, job protection, and the establishment of a dedicated just transition fund for green job creation. The discussions also highlighted the need for reskilling programs and strengthened social protection mechanisms, as well as institutionalizing tripartite dialogue involving government, employers, and labor unions.

The labor leaders emphasized the importance of guaranteeing against layoffs linked to economic climate reforms and investments in renewable energy. This meeting is seen as a strategic move to align political interests ahead of the upcoming electoral cycle.
