Court Clears Goodluck Jonathan for 2027 Presidential Run

On Tuesday, a Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is eligible to participate in the 2027 presidential election. Justice Peter Lifu presided over the case, which involved a lawsuit filed by lawyer Johnmari Jideobi.

The suit sought to restrain Jonathan from being recognized as a candidate by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), arguing that he was ineligible due to having completed a full term as president from 2010 to 2015. However, the court dismissed this argument, stating that Jonathan remains legally qualified to contest.

The ruling also noted that a faction of the People's Democratic Party, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, reportedly offered Jonathan a waiver to emerge as the party's sole presidential candidate for the upcoming election. This decision marks a significant development in Nigeria's political landscape as the country prepares for the 2027 elections.
