Court Sacks House of Reps Member for Unconstitutional Defection

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sacked Hon. Abubakar Suleiman Gummi from the House of Representatives for defecting from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Justice Obiora Egwuatu directed the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abba, to stop recognizing Gummi and ordered INEC to conduct a fresh election within 30 days to fill the vacant seat. The court found Gummi's defection unconstitutional, violating Section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution.

The judgment highlighted the need for politicians to respect the wishes of electorates and not switch parties without relinquishing their mandate.
