Court Orders Remand of Ex-AGF Malami and Family

On February 27, 2026, Justice Joyc Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court in Maitama, Abuja, ordered the remand of former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, his wife Hajia Bashir Asab, and son Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami. They are to remain in custody at Kuje Correctional Centre and Suleja Medium Correctional Centre while their bail application is determined.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has re-assigned their case to Justice Emeka Nwite, who will oversee the prosecution of 16 counts of money laundering against them. The charges involve conspiring to disguise and conceal unlawfully obtained funds totaling approximately N8.7 billion.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court proceedings included a request from the prosecution to amend the charges, which was granted by Justice Abdulmalik.

The defendants were previously granted bail under certain conditions, which they are expected to adhere to during the ongoing legal process.
