Court Grants Malami, Son ₦200 Million Bail in Terror Case

On February 3, 2023, the Federal High Court in Abuja granted bail to former Attorney General Abubakar Malami and his son Abdulaziz Malami, amounting to ₦200 million, in connection with alleged terrorism-related offenses. Presiding Justice Joyce Abdulmalik ordered the defendants to provide two sureties and to deposit their international passports as part of the bail conditions.

The charges against Abdulaziz Malami include five counts related to alleged terrorism financing and illegal possession of firearms. The Department of State Services (DSS) accused him of possessing a Sturm Magnum 17 firearm, 16 live rounds, and other ammunition in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, without a license.

The prosecution argued that the possession of these items amounted to preparation for committing acts of terrorism, violating the Terrorism Prevention Prohibition Act of 2022. Abdulaziz Malami pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The case has been adjourned to March 4, 2023, for further proceedings.
