El-Rufai Granted Bail After Mother's Death Amid Trial

Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State, has been granted temporary bail by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) after the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai. This decision allows him to briefly leave custody to attend to burial rites for his late mother, who passed away on Friday in Cairo, Egypt.

The bail was confirmed by his son, Bashir El-Rufai, who expressed gratitude for the support received during this difficult time. Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, a respected matriarch at 100 years old, was known for her quiet influence within the family and community.

Her passing has deepened the family's grief, particularly following the recent death of her daughter-in-law, Safiya Ali El-Rufai. Condolences have poured in from various figures, including President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who acknowledged her contributions to family and national development.

El-Rufai is currently under investigation for alleged corruption and money laundering, with his arraignment taking place on March 24, 2026.
