BREAKING: FG Bans Establishment of New Federal Universities, Polytechnics, Others [DETAILS]

The Federal Government has announced a ban on the establishment of new federal tertiary institutions, including universities and polytechnics, in a bid to address the proliferation of poorly resourced schools and declining educational standards. The decision was approved during a Federal Executive Council meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu.

Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, highlighted the challenges of access to quality education, duplication of institutions, and overstretched infrastructure in the country. Despite having 72 federal universities, 108 state universities, and 159 private universities, along with numerous polytechnics and colleges of education, recent admission figures show many operate below capacity.

The moratorium on new federal tertiary institutions aims to redirect resources towards upgrading existing institutions, improving infrastructure, and increasing capacity to ensure Nigerian graduates continue to be globally respected.
